About the Warren/Conner Development Coalition Today, W/CDC is a strong, capable, and endowed organization with an active and diverse Board. Our three main programs- Rebuilding Communities, Youth on the Edge... of Greatness, and Partnership for Economic Independence- are all being incorporated as separate entities in a manner similar to the current structuring of our real estate subsidiaries. These "affiliate partner organizations" have their own executive directors and boards, but will continue to receive support from W/CDC in areas such as administration and development.
When the Board and Staff opened its doors, the Board issued this statement of vision and commitment:
We believe that the next several years will be an exciting and challenging time for Detroit's Eastside. Opportunities for business, housing, and human development will open for those communities ready to seize them. How this occurs, what direction it takes, who influences it and who benefits from it will depend on whether we can rely on an informed, focused and broad-based organization to advocate for the diverse and unique interests of Detroit's Eastside community.
The Warren/Conner Development Coalition exists to provide such a vehicle. For business, we can facilitate joint problem-solving, promote a better business climate, offer technical and employment referrals, increase credit opportunities and encourage local patronage.
For institutions, which are so vital for our quality of life, the Coalition can provide a forum to meet with your colleagues in the service community; to coordinate, discuss and improve the health, social, educational, and spiritual needs of this neighborhood.
Finally, and most important, for those of us who live here, we offer a way to make lasting contribution to this community, influence the direction it takes, and gain economic and political self-sufficiency and control over the forces that shape our neighborhood, and our lives.
We believe that no one will help us if we are not willing to help ourselves. We also believe that if we demonstrate our commitment, the resources will become available to enable us to cope with the present and take control of our future.
Our dream is to build on the richness that already exists here, and shape our community into the safe, pleasant, and diverse neighborhood that has defined our history and can assure our future.
W/CDC owns its 30,000 square foot, renovated headquarters building, and also serves as landlord to a number of service agencies. We employ a dynamic staff and manage an annual budget of approximately $3 million.
As WCDC enters its 25th year, we remain an important community-based institution in the City of Detroit, and especially for Detroit’s Eastside. Our corporate restructuring has created opportunities for our former programs to grow and thrive as affiliated non profits with their own executive and volunteer leadership. WCDC as a Parent Corporation is reinventing itself in order to provide effective back-office services to our Affiliate Partners.
More importantly, our community is coming back to life. The obvious signs of new investment are everywhere – from a “new and improved” Warren-Conner Shopping Center, to a rebuilt Villages at Parkside – from a brand new Mack Alter Square – to three new community parks – from new affordable owner-occupied homes at Morningside Commons done by U SNAP BAC – to new market rate housing at Marlborough Estates and Kercheval Estates and Jefferson North Park and Jefferson Village – from the Chandler Park Aquatic Park to the recently-announced plans by the Salvation Army to put a $50 million new state-of-the art Community, Recreation and Performing Arts Center on Conner at Chandler Park Drive. While we have a long way to go, especially in a weak economy, this community knows it is on its way back to prosperity. We hope and believe that WCDC has played an important role in this revitalization.
WCDC’s traditional role of collaborator, advocate and educator remains the same – and as always will be the role that defines the heart and soul of the organization.

EASTSIDE WARRIOR AWARDS
In Africa, “warrior” means “protector of the village.” Every five years since WCDC’s 15th anniversary, the “Eastside Warrior Awards” are given out to individuals who have a distinguished and acknowledged track record of dedication to Detroit’s Eastside “village.” There are many forms that this dedication can take. The awards are decided by a select committee of eastsiders, including former winners. The “Eastside Warrior Awards” are handcrafted solid brass awards crafted for us by Hackett Brass on the Eastside. The Awards were given out in 1999 and 2005. They will be given out again in 2009 on WCDC’s 25th anniversary. To make a nomination any time between now and 2009, simply complete and submit the form below.
